Functioning of Color Sorter Machine

Color sorters and graders, also known as Optical sorters or Digital sorters, are a separation device that classifies agricultural products by Color & Size.

The machine detects the Color and Size of the things that pass through them and sort them based on pre-set conditions fed into the machine.

It uses mechanical devices that eject and diverts items based on their colors and separates them as per the pre-fixed acceptable range of the group.

A high-speed, high-resolution infrared camera sensor in the machine (Model specific) effectively removes foreign matter contamination during the sorting and grading process.

The Color sorters are widely used in the food industry to separate Rice, Pulses, Nuts, Wheat, Spices, Coffee Bean, Tea, Plastic, Minerals, etc

The Color sorters are generally divided into two types

  • 1. Chute type Color sorter

    Chute type sorters are used for Agri products smaller in size (0.5mm to 2 mm). Ex. Rice and Multi grains etc.


  • 2. Belt type sorters

    Belt type sorters are used for products slightly bigger in size (1mm to 4 mm). Ex. Nuts, Plastic, Stones, etc.

Ans: The capacity of the sorting machine depends upon the type and model.

The minimum capacity of a Belt-type Color sorter is 500Kg/hr, while the maximum processing capacity is 2500 Kg/hr. (Contamination will affect processed quantity)

The minimum capacity of a Chute type Color sorter is 500Kg/hr (1 Chute), and the maximum capacity is 20,000 Kg/hr (12Chutes) (Contamination will affect processed quantity)

Ans: Chute type Color sorter machines have a minimum of 1 chute to a maximum of 12 chutes per machine.

Ans: In Chute type Color sorters, two cameras available in each chute, and in belt type Color sorters, two or four cameras (model specific) are available in each vibrator.

The Color sorter also needs a Cabin with Airconditioning, Air Compressor, Elevator, and UPS
